Dry Runs: Basic and Foundational Skills Series
Dry runs. A dry run or field drill is the process of practicing a diving skill on land. It is an extremely useful tool used to reinforce a new skill that has been taught in an academic module. Underwater a significant amount a diver’s capacity is used up simply remaining stable in the water, especially for divers new to the GUE system. A dry run gives students the opportunity to rehearse skills with minimal task loading and allows an instructor to provide comprehensive feedback, something that is difficult to achieve underwater. Finally, dry runs start to build muscle memory, which aim to make executing the skill underwater much easier.
